Question
At start up, the image on my monitor blacks out in a sequence, then everything freezes. I have a user password to log on to my computer but clicking on my name does not do anything. It's a Dell Pentium 4, with Dell monitor, OS Windows XP Home. Please help if possible. Thank you!

Answer
First lets try getting into safe mode so we can run a checkdisk.
Continually hit F8 before windows boots. Choose safe mode from the menu. Do the normal login. If safe mode hangs on loading the desktop just hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue loading. Once in safe mode open my computer and right click c:
Choose properties and go to the tools tab. Under error checking choose check now. Check both boxes and choose to do it at reboot when it asks.
Reboot
After check disk is done see if you can get into windows. if so you most likely need to clean up and defragment now. Go here:

instal and run that program. Say no to demo mode.
After that go to start-programs-accessories-system tools and run disk defragmenter on drive c:
Then reboot

If after running checkdisk you still can not get into windows, go to safe mode again and run disk defragmenter from safe mode.

If still no go, let me know if you have access to a windows xp home cd
