Question
Hi there,

I have recently received a graphic card from a friend.
It was broken so he offered to give it to me.
The graphic card is a NVIDIA FX5500.

When I turn on the computer
(After I have plugged it into the computer, also connecting the screen cable to the graphic card)
Nothing happens, I see nothing on the screen, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.
The fan on the graphic card is turning.

My PC:
AMD Athlon XP
2.8 GHz
512mb RAM

I'm not sure what's wrong with with it but could use your help.

Thank you

Answer
Well if it is broken I hope you realize it may not work.
But check the following:

If you did not have an addon card before, you may need to enable the graphics slot or disable the onboard graphics.
Enter the bios for the computer by pressing the correct F ket to enter the bios or setup.
If you have a Dell, I can guarantee the graphics slot is disabled if you did not have an add on card before. You'll just need to enable it. Also check that the onboard graphics is set to disabled or auto.

Reboot and see if you get anything on screen. If still nothing (not even boot screen) I would say it is dead. The fan will run even if the graphics card does not.

Needless to say you can purchase a card better or the same as this one for around $20 to $30.
