Question Hi,
A few years ago I decided to install an internal capture card ("PCI tuner card") in my computer, but being pretty poor, I cheaped out and bought a $30 model online (Honestech). All I use it for is to capture things for my websites - screenshots from VHS/DVD, short video footage, occasional sound clips. So it's held out all right.
But now suddenly the sound is completely static-y when I play back video footage. I've tried out new wires. I've hooked it up to a new VCR. I've cleaned out dust inside my computer. My assumption is that, in addition to the low-quality screencaps it takes (they all have a nice grain to them), that the cheap piece of junk is dying.
I need help finding a new, better capture card. I'm not as poor as I was back then, so I really want to invest in a good one. I see a lot of the newer ones are set up to take HD quality footage from live TV, and I really don't need that option. What kind of specifications make a good capture card that I need to look for? Are there any suggestions you can make?
Thank you!

That is the whole listing on newegg. You can narrow it down by using the categories on the left.
I am partial to Hauppauge. They have a nice card with dual tuners. I actually have this card already myself. Don't use the driver that come with them though, get the new ones from their website. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116010
Make sure what ever card you choose has either a digital or HD tuner. Otherwise you'll need a converter box after next year.
You'll find a lot of external tuners on there. I myself have not had good luck with these or the quality is not good.
If you have a PCI-E slot you can get a more powerful card, but a PCI card should be fine for you.
As far as specs that is up to you. Basic card are mostly the same. But they get more expensive as you add more features and faster processors, dual tuner, more capability, ect.
Any card you look at on there will have pictures and a specs tab in the page for that card.
Take a look at the one I have, I think it will meet your needs nicely.
