Subject: Card Replacement

Question
I must replace an old card, an Nvidia TNT2 (AGP) with
another that will be a direct fit in its open slot and
function as well, or better.

I need help finding one that will be as inexpensive as
possible, whilst providing DVI and similar, or preferably
slightly better performance than the TNT2.

My concern is that I might make a mistake and select one
that will not work correctly, or fit the slot.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer
You could have an AGP 2x or 4x. There are cards that fit both of these slots, but if you do have a 4x you can move up to bigger cards while dumping the compatibility of the 2x. Most AGP cards come in 2x/4x or 4x/8x.
Run CPU-Z

Run that and on the mainboard tab look at the bottem. Under graphics interface, tell me max supported and transfer rate. Should be 2x, 4x or 8x. Then I can help you get a new card.
