Video Card Problems - nvidia 9600gt power off

Expert: Bobbert - 10/8/2009

Question
hey bobbert another question.i have nvidia 9600gt manufacturer-simmtronics
which takes power supply .
i usually put my PC at night on downloading. i turn off monitor even keyboard and mouse . i want to save more power. can i break the power supply of the card in running pc. like pull the cable out or install a power switch between the cable and turn the switch off . any problem?

Answer
No, generally you cannot disconnect hardware while the computer is powered on, nor can you disconnect the auxilary power cable to the 9600GT while its running, you risk heavy damage to the computer, and electrocution for yourself. However, the 9600GT is quite power efficient, and when it isn't being used (i.e: the drivers notice a period of inactivity), the card itself goes into a power saving mode, which dramatically reduces its operational requirements. The only point where the card is actually going to draw heavy amounts of power is when you're playing a videogame, or doing something else GPU intensive (For example watching a Blu-ray movie).
