Video Card Problems - Geforce 5500 fx

Expert: Justin Breithaupt - 10/22/2005

Question
Hi,
I have just bought an Inno 3d geforce 5500 fx. At best I have beginner level experience in this field. I bought this card just so that I would be able to play most of the good games of 2003/04 with acceptable fps and graphics. I also had the choice to buy a used ATI 9700, which the vendor told me would be able to play most of the modern games as well.So here are my questions:

1) Are second hand cards any good? How big a risk is involved in using them again
2)The retailer of my video card is a Hong Kong based company. So will this card prove to be at least a bit useful, keeping in mind the games which i want to play.
3) Which high end cards of this generation would prove useful in about two years time. What would be their prices? I can also go for used cards if you suggest them.
4) Is ATI's technology better or Nvidia's?
5)How do I check the version of installed driver
and will I experience any problems if I update it.
6)  is there any chance that video card prices will fall down in the same manner CPU prices have fallen down in the last five to six years.
7)I can play doom 3 on my system at high quality and 800 / 600 resolution with just anti aliasing off and with a good fps most of the time. However whenever I start Half Life 2 a dialog box appears which says reseting video properties and after two or three times it says that a direct x 7 compatible card is required. What is happening?
8)would F.E.A.R run on my pc with lowest settings

My system specs are:

1)512mb DDR RAM ( Kingston)
2) Intel gbv2 motherboard
3)80 gb hard disk
4) pentium 1.8 ghz processor

Answer
ATI makes the most compatible cards. your computer sounds like it will handle most games but not the realy high end 3d games. make sure only the games are running, no internet or antivirus when you are playing the games. No utilities for your printer or scanner or other devices.
