Question
MY SON HAS AN OLD XBOX THAT HE STILL LIKES TO USE AS ELL AS HIS 360. LAST NIGHT THE DISC DRAW WENT CRAZY AND OPENED AND CLOSED CONTINUALLY EVERY SECOND LIKE IT WAS POSSESSED. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT DOING IT WAS TO TURN IT OFF. WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON IT WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE CRAZY MODE AGAIN. I TURNED IT OFF BUT IT VERY SCARILY TURNED ITS SELF BACK ON AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES. IT DID NOT READ THE DISC AND CONTINUED TO SLIDE OPEN AND CLOSE.IT IS NOW UNPLUGGED AND SILENT! ANY IDEAS? IF IT IS TOTALLY GONE, (BEYOND ECONOMICAL REPAIR) THEN IS THERE ANY WAY TO PLAY THE OLD XBOX GAMES ON THE 360.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

Answer
Gday Robert,

My guess is it sounds like the disk drive eject button is stuck in.  (Thus the constantly opening and closing)  If it is not physically problem but a software problem causing this you may be right and the system is gone.

I would be incline first with the machine turned off check the eject button and see if it is stuck in or at least hit it from several angles to see if it is stuck if you can free it.  (If it makes or feels like it is okay then it maybe something software rather than hardware.)  I'd almost be incline to pull the X-box to pieces and remove the disk drive then re-install it.  Maybe there is something inside the disk drive causing this.  If it is not this best case sanario is the drive needs to be replaced.  Worst would be the X-box mother board.

Hope this helps
