Video Game Repair/NBA JAM Restarting

We have an NBA JAM arcade that will spontaneously restart, sometimes in the third quarter, sometimes right after it turns on. We've replaced the power supply and the issue still exists.

We have reseated the chips and connectors.

Is there anything else we can try? Does the big transformer at the bottom of the cabinet play any role that we should be aware of? Thank you!

You say that you've replaced the power supply, but you might need to turn the voltage up. Games like NBA Jam usually require at least +5.2VDC at the board. Depending on the integrity of the harness and the connectors, you might be experiencing a voltage drop that puts it right on the edge of what the game needs.

On the power supply, turn the knob in the positive direction about 1/3 of a turn. Turn the game on and see if it resets. If it does, turn the game off and turn it another 1/3 and repeat until the game is no longer resetting.

Hope this helps!

I can answer questions regarding coin-operated arcade game questions down to the logic board. Error codes, erratic operation, dead boards, I can help with them all. I can help with video monitors on a very limited and basic level only.

I have spent nearly 20 years as an avid arcade collector, and spent nearly 10 of those years as the lead tech for a large arcade operator, doing work for manufacturers and other coin-operated amusement companies around the globe. I maintain a good sized collection of arcade games, as well as a large inventory of spare parts for a wide range of arcade machines.
