Video Game Repair/silver strike "freezes"

2009 SSB has a tendency to freeze up. Turning it off and on resets the game but eventually freezes again. This happens only when being played. It will run fine until you start a game , then freeze up at random frames. All the self-test programs read ok.

Hi Chris,

This is a pretty common problem with the SSB hardware platform (the same as the Golden Tee Live series). What you are seeing is one of two things- either the video card is overheating, which is causing it to fail or you're seeing a dying hard drive. My first suggestion would be to remove the video card, clean the fan (if there is one) and then try again. While you have the system open, be sure that all of the fans on the box are working (there are exhaust fans to keep the air moving through the CPU case). If any of them are not running at full speed, replace them.

The second thing to look at is the hard drive. While you won't see anything physically, if you put your hand on it, you may feel it "clicking" when trying to access parts of the game. If this is the case, replace the drive and you'll be all set.

Honestly, I think it's the video card. Give it a shot and see what happens!

Good luck,

Video Game Repair

I can answer questions regarding coin-operated arcade game questions down to the logic board. Error codes, erratic operation, dead boards, I can help with them all. I can help with video monitors on a very limited and basic level only.

I have spent nearly 20 years as an avid arcade collector, and spent nearly 10 of those years as the lead tech for a large arcade operator, doing work for manufacturers and other coin-operated amusement companies around the globe. I maintain a good sized collection of arcade games, as well as a large inventory of spare parts for a wide range of arcade machines.
