Video Game Strategies/Old RPG

Question
QUESTION: Not really needing a strategy, just wanting to see if you could help me in remembering an old RPG. If I don't give enough detail about it, let me know and I will try to remember more about the game. I can't figure out the name but I remember a couple of scenes, one is the character is in a main town that has multiple levels and at the top is a giant dragon head that wishes for help in finding his baby. Another scene takes place in an underwater area where you get a trident to fight with. The last scene i can remember is about is a boss battle in a pyramid where its a sphinx. Also if it helps, the whole game is a side-scrollingish non random battle rpg. If i remember right it should have been out around the 90's

ANSWER: Hi there, Kyle!

Just in glancing at it, nothing comes to mind. That doesn't mean I'm done with this , though! :)

a) Do you remember what platform this game was out for? Did you play it on ROM or on the actual platform itself?

b) By 'non-random battle' RPG, do you mean it was an action RPG a la Legend Of Gaia/Terranigma? Or that you can see all the battles moving around before you engage them a la Lufia 2? (for the record, I don't think either of these is the game, but it'll give me a better feel for what sort of 'feel' the game has to it)

c) Is there anything memorable about the battle system, leveling system (having to place your points), et cetera?

4) Can you recall how large your party was? Most 'standard' RPGs are a 4-man party, but a lot of action RPGs are single person.

I'm always up for a mystery, so I'm quite happy to hunt down this game and see if I can't remember it or at least find it for you!

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: A. The platform was sega i believe, might have been on a different system since i tried looking for it at a list of old saga games and didnt see it, had the actual cartridge, and had sega genesis and nes so not sure which it was on.
b. by non random battle i mean it was sorta like ghouls and goblins, monster runs around and you go over and hit it.
c.battle system as before and was pretty much like Zelda, no real leveling system and the memorable part that i can think of was the baby dragon quest and warping around to different stages by use of these weird redish orb pedistals and that underwater level where the character had a trident weapon, also the main area which was like 5 stories tall that had you jump and climb ladders to reach each part had shops and an Inn.
4. no other party members just your knight dressed character walking around. i remember the inventory system was a lot like typical rpgs, kind of like FF7.

Answer
Hi again!

Thanks for your patience on this one! I'm sorry to admit that I'm stumped. It doesn't sound immediately familiar to any NES RPGs I'd ever played, and I haven't played enough Sega games to be sure. There's a few small things in my memory that suggest I *may* have seen it, but I can't bring it up enough to give a name.

I will keep looking for information on this one and will definitely update if I manage to find which game it is, but for the moment, I'm going to have to hang my head in defeat; this one's so far escaping me.

I'll check around a few 'name that game' sites and see if they have any more luck. Let me know if you manage to figure it out, so I can stop hunting!

Expertise

I can answer strategy questions for just about any video games. RPGs and collecting/raising sims are my major specialty, though I am also experienced in general strategy games, a variety of MMORPGs, and possibly even some much more esoteric ones. I can't promise that I'll be able to answer all your questions from personal experience, but I can promise that if I can't, I will do my utmost to research the answer before I give it to you.

Best consoles to ask about: NES, SNES, GB/GBC, GBA, Playstation, Playstation II. If you are asking outside of this list, please give a little extra time for some research to be done on the game.

Please note: if you are wanting a particular version of strategy (i.e. a *fast* playthrough, a powerful playthrough, a challenge game, a specific boss beat in a specific way), make sure the details are added. The more I know about what *you* want to know, the better.

Experience

I am an avid player of video games of various types, including RPGs, strategy games, MMORPGs, et cetera. I have been playing since the Atari 1300 days, and even back then, learning the strategy and the like of the games was as interesting as beating it.
