Vietnam - beach & postage?
Expert: Al Slagle - 11/5/2009
Question Hello. Thank you in advance for your time & expertise.
My family, wife & 2 boys aged 11 & 12 and I, will be in Vietnam for 5 weeks starting the beginning of Dec. & ending the beginning of Jan. We arrive in Hanoi & leave from Ho Chi Minh - so we will head south overall.
2 questions, if I may:
1. I am looking for non-touristic beach with cheap housing. A hut with a toilet is fine. A good restaurant or two if good. the main focus would be less tourists, quiet, simple, off the beaten path.
Over all we love to travel "off the beaten path" so anything else you have to offer would be appreciated.
2. When win Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, we might find something of interest to send back to home. Can you tell us either where to find the rates for packages or how to contact the Vietnamese postal system?
Answer Hello jr,
Wow, sounds like you have quite a trip planned! With 5 weeks you should be able to cover a lot of ground!
As far as beaches are concerned, I can only personally say I've been to one in Vietnam...that being Nha Trang. It is a resort town and the guesthouses are cheap (US$3-5 per person per night). There are many good restaurants in the area and the overall atmosphere of the town is nice. Snorkelling and diving tours are available as well. Whether or not it's "off the beaten path" enough for you, I guess, will depend on your past experience. I would say for Vietnam, it's a major resort area. However, compared to Hawaii, it's definitely "off the beaten path." My guess is that you're looking for something a bit quieter and less touristy. Doc Let Beach, Ca Na, and Mui Ne Beach are some other beaches but I haven't personally experienced them. In terms of beaches, I'm afraid I'm more knowledgeable about Thailand so if you'll be spending some time there as well, I'd be more than happy to help you out in that area.
For postal rates, I was able to find two sites that may have the information you're looking for. The first is VNPT (Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group):
http://db.vnpt.com.vn/TariffComment.asp?ID=1232
The second is EMS service from Vietnam:
http://www.ems.com.vn/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=177&lanid=EN
As for other recommendations, I'd definitely hit Hue. It's a beautiful and historical town and the river cruise is worth it if you're into seeing some temples and other sites.
I hope this has been even a little helpful to you. You'll have much more time there than I had so when you return, you can probably take over the role as "Vietnam Expert!" Have a wonderful trip!
