Subject: Scuppernong vines

Question
I have two vines which spread about 40 feet on my chain link fence. But all kinds of weeds and junk bushes grow along the fence too. I would like to use an herbicide on the plants but I'm afraid of killing the scuppernongs. Do the roots of the vine spread far from where it's planted?

Answer
Art,

Anything you use on the weeds will also kill the grapes, or at least seriously affect them. If these vines are really important to you I would suggest using just plain old elbow grease and pull out as much as you can by hand. After that, either mulch the area well and/or be more diligent in removing unwanted plant growth before it becomes established.

Regards,

Vito
