Vines/greenbrier smilax

Question
I am having a fight w/greenbrier smilax in my yard. I am curious about how you would recommend getting rid of it, or at least the best way of controlling it. It creeps through my azaleas, wisteria, and through boxwoods. I'm sure it can't be good for those plants. Anyway, any ideas you may have I would appreciate, and also wondering what time of year is best to "stage an attack".
thanks,
Shelley Stoker

Answer
Hello Shelley,

I would cut the smilax as far back as possible then apply a weed and brush killer to the cut end stems according to label directions. This work best when the plant is actively growing. More than one application may be needed.
