Expert: Nancy Date: 5/2/2008 Subject: black specks on african violet
Question I have tiny black specks on my violet, what could this be?
Answer This is somewhat hard to answer without seeing the plant.
1. Are the black specks movable? It could be excreetment of mice or some insect.
2. What happens if you blow on this? This may be black sooty mold. Are there ants anywhere near the plant? Aphids leave honeydew which attracts ants. The honeydew then catches a fungus and produces sooty mold.
If you see small greenish bugs around your plants, around the flowers, this could be aphids. These can be squashed between thumb and fingers.
