AboutAl Dzina Expertise I can answer questions about violin and guitar making and restoration. I will not answer questions about playing these instruments, because I am a maker, not a player.
Experience I was trained in violin making in Germany and have been working at this craft for sixty years.
Question I just recently bought a new violin, complete with violin, bow, and rosin. :]
Thing is, while tightening the bow, after a few minutes strings begin popping out. The bow is tightened so that the distance between the middle is a little less than a centimeter, about the width of a pencil (so I've been advised). So I loosen it slightly and I'm afraid to tighten it any more because about five strings have popped out since.
There's no way it can be TOO tightened. But.. I'm worried?
Answer Hi Sheila;
Hairs should not pull out of the bow tip. Unless, if any hairs have worn and broken and were pulled off instead of being cut off, it can loosen the knot inside the tip and other hairs can then be pulled out under normal tension. Take it to your violin vendor and have him check it out.
