Question
I see a similar question, mine is pretty close.  I was asked by a family friend to try and research the potential worth or value of a violin with the following markings: Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno 1713.  Can you tell me anything about this particular violin?

Answer
HI Robin;
Antonio Stradivari's designs and labels, as well as those of many other famous makers, have been copied more than just about any art objects in history. Virtually all genuine Strad's and Guarneri del Jesu's that are known to still exist are accounted for. The odds that you are going to find a genuine Old Italian masterwork in your uncle's closet or in that old attic are slim to none

Many violin questions submitted to All Experts consists of written descriptions and labels of old violins. On the basis of this information, the writers ask me to tell them if the violins are genuine, and their value. I regret to say this is impossible; the actual violin must be examined in person. The great majority of labels in violins are counterfeit and no indication of the real maker.

I was trained in violin making in Germany and have been working at this craft for sixty years.
