MISSING 2 STRINGS AND AVERAGE WEAR. Model 307 is that the serial number?  What year would this be?  Is this truly Vintage?

The Roth co. goes back to the early 1900's, Scherl was not part of the firm until 1938. I have no record of exactly when the model 307 started, but it is listed as early as the 1960's. In general, violin firms did not start using model numbers placed inside their instruments until the late 40's so my feeling is that your violin was made post WW2 and probably not until the 60's. If the bow were to be original to the instrument, that also would make the instrument post 1970 approx. since the Glasser bows did not come out until then. I am not sure of the model name, as my records have that model-307, as an Otto Bruchner.

The term "Vintage" is not used correctly in the description. the word simply means "wine age" and to be used properly needs to have a year after it. For example the violin is vintage 1970, so even a brand new violin can have a vintage, it would be vintage 2013.  If they were trying to say it was an antique, that is wrong since an antique would have to be 100 years old to gain that term.

As far as value goes, without seeing the instrument in person, I really could not give an accurate value. Average wear and missing strings means that no work has been done, so it can be assumed that it needs at minimum all new strings, the bow rehaired, the bridge replaced and the pegs adjusted. It could still be all scratched up. A model 307 today is typically worth around $300-400 in mint condition, so given the condition, and I am being generous, the value would be somewhere around $200-250 and possible less depending on the physical condition - scratches, cracks...

I can answer questions on violin, viola, cello and bass making, repair and maintenance as well as supply general violin value ranges and information on instrument makers’ assuming the instrument's as labeled. I don't give values for modern makers as many of these modern makers are yet unknown to me. I can only give you feedback based on what information you give me, and no authority on the instrument can know every maker's work that ever lived. I have access to many books on makers and auction prices on over 25,000 makers, as well as having 36 years of experience with selling and appraising violins. Without having the instrument in hand, any estimate over the internet is just a guess as the label inside an instrument is more often wrong than right, so just having that information is not very useful. Pictures can sometimes be helpful but only so much, as the "feel" of the instrument along with small clues in workmanship and varnish cannot be seen in pictures. Any pictures should be high quality close-ups of the top and back. Additional photos of the front and treble side of the neck are also useful. It is always best to have an instrument seen in person at a violin shop that does appraisals. I can also provide advice on bows, rosin, strings and other string instrument accessories. As I am now retired, I have no bias towards selling anything; I only wish to share my knowledge and experience by providing information for those that may be getting confused by misinformation, misdirection or conflicting statements. (While I have seen many thousands of instruments and have performed numerous appraisals; if I have not evaluated an instrument in person, any information I set forth in an opinion is just that, an opinion based solely on what you have provided. Thusly, no financial decision should be based on that opinion, but rather, further investigation should be performed by having the instrument examined in person.)
