About Al Dzina
Expertise
I can answer questions about violin and guitar making and restoration. I will not answer questions about playing these instruments, because I am a maker, not a player.

Experience
I was trained in violin making in Germany and have been working at this craft for sixty years.

Question
Dear Al Dzina,
My name is Gunther Soto, I live in Mexiko and my German grandfather gave to my mom before he died a Guarnerius dated 1700's.  As you can imagine, I would like to know if the instrument is original and his value.  What would you suggest me? I don't feel like I will found a trustfull Luthier in Mexiko who could provide me with this service.  I hope you can give me an idea where to start, you can write me in german if you prefer.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Gunther;
The only solution is that you will have to travel to the U.S.A. or ship the instrument to a shop in the U.S.A. If you decide to travel north I am located in Orange CA just outside of Los Angeles. I can look at the violin and tell you in a few minutes if it is real or not, at no charge. If I need to make a written appraisal it will cost $50.00.
Al;
