Question I have a violin I played for a short time 30 plus years ago. I am wondering if it is an antique and worth keeping or if I should not worry about it. It is in very good condition and needs to be restrung.
Thank you for your assistance,
Jeff
Answer Hi Jeff,
I am assuming the violin you are referring to was new when you purchased/played it 30+ years ago. If this is indeed the case, then no it would not be considered an antique. However, this does not mean it doesn't have value. The fact that the instrument needs to be restrung shouldn't have too much bearing on its worth as most musicians prefer to choose their own strings to fit a preference. Now, I realize it is a 1/4 size and therefore would be for a child/beginner, but there are many many parents out there who have experience and would still want to choose their childs strings themselves.
If you are not concerned with keeping it for sentimental reasons then I would suggest taking the instrument to a local music shop. Preferrably one that deals in string instruments. In Toronto, Remenyi House of Music is a great location. These places will often purchase a used instrument for resale or will put the approximate worth of an instrument towards the cost of a new/larger/different instrument.
