Expertise
I can answer questions about violin and guitar making and restoration. I will not answer questions about playing these instruments, because I am a maker, not a player.

Experience
I was trained in violin making in Germany and have been working at this craft for sixty years.

Question
Hello.
I am curious to know how to rosin my bow. I'm a bass player and I just bought my first double bass, but I figured that all string players apply rosin to their bows using the same method. I think I have the tequnique down, and I've used varrying pressures on the rosin/strings, but no rosin is coming off of my rosin piece. Is it possibly too hard? It almost has a hard plastic-like texture. I am completely new to this, so if you could help, that would be great. Thank you very much

Answer
Hi Telson;
What you need to do is cross-hatch the surface of your rosin block. You can use a nail or sharp knife. This will allow the rosin dust to move onto the bow hair. When rosin is cast into the block form it forms a hard surface which needs to be primed before use.
Al;
