Question
How do I find out who made my antique violin and how much it is worth?I know that it is Italian.

Answer
Hi Don,

Well, I suppose the first thing I need to know is where you are? Are you in Canada? More specifically, are you in Ontario in the GTA? If so, I can suggest a few different options for you.

To have a violin appraised you would need to take it to a knowledgeable violin shop which offers services such as appraisals, repairs, etc. I can't really say anything regarding the worth of your instrument. Knowing only that it is Italian really isn't much to go on as a great many factors go into the worth of a violin.
Having some information available such as the dealer from whom you purchased the violin, and the price you paid for it would be useful. From there a master could examine the instrument and hopefully determine the maker (or at least the workshop which it came from), the age and any repairs that have been done in the past.

If you are in the GTA, I would suggest that you make an appointment with the Violin masters at Remenyi House of Music.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
