Expertise
I can answer questions about violin and guitar making and restoration. I will not answer questions about playing these instruments, because I am a maker, not a player.

Subject: violin bow repair

Question
My husband just bought a violin. We both want to 'fiddle' with it but nothing formal. It is an inexpensive violin.

While applying rosin (again)to the bow, it snapped. The bow broke at the top (not the screw end) at the curve from the stick to the hair.

Question: is this repairable? can it be glued or repaired with a small screw and glue? It doesn't need to be pretty, just work.

How much are inexpensive bows?

Thank you for your help
Kristina

Answer
Hi Kristina;
Most bow brakes can be repaired, but it is costly, approx.
$60.00. An inexpensive bow would cost about $25.00. If you decide to glue the bow yourself do not use a screw. Use a good strong wood glue and wrap the damaged area with a strong thread which should then be covered by the same glue.
