Question
My husband and I are from California and will be visiting DC the end of June and then renting a car and driving down to South Carolina.  We have several days to get to SC and no fixed itinerary, so we are flexible.  We'll probably stay a couple days "somewhere" in Virginia.  Do you have suggestions as to what to see and do while there?

I attended my senior year of high school in Norfolk - graduated from Granby High (back in '65).  My father was stationed in Norfolk, but only for a year and it was so many years ago, I don't remember much about the area.

Any suggestions as to the local attractions (anywhere in Virginia), particularly those of historical nature, would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lori

Answer
Hi Lori,
Wow, I'm sure there have been changes since you were here. I would suggest you spend some time in Norfolk which is now an area totally different since you were last here. The harbor has been transformed into a major area for crusing and entertainment, and it's now a major port, which also harbors Nauticus, the Nation's national maritime museum.  In addition, you can take historic cruses on the river passing the shipyards and points of interent from the Civil War. Each of the neighboring towns, Hamptom (home of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, historic Portmouth ( Children's Science Museum of Virginia), and Newport News ( The Mariner's Museum has ownership for the rebuilding of the salvaged Monitor, and salvage artifacts from the Titanic). Spend several days exploring downtown Norfolk which has become the cosmopolitan center of the Southeast, go to Harbor Park to see the NY Mets, visit the Chrysler Museum (on par with Museums anywhere- I'm from NY), visit Nauticus and the Mac Arthur museum.  If you want to shop, we have the very upscale Mac Arthur mall and the large outlet centers in Williamsburg. Major hotels here, The Sheraton, Marriott, and Omni,in addition to all the chain motels, are right on the Harbor.  I live in Virginia Beach and have been here since 1991 - boy has it change. Spend a few days and reminiscence. You'll be very surprised on how it's changed. It's a great cosmopolitan area.
Enjoy your visit. Hope this helps!
Helen
