Question
i am looking to relocate from new york. i know someone from newport news.is the area hampton,va. a good place.are crime and gangs a major concern, and does the area seem good for retiring.do you know areas to avoid and the better ones.

Answer
Hampton & Newport News are part of Hamptom Roads which also includes Chesapeake, Norfolk, Williamsburg Suffolk and Virginia Beach.
Both Hampton & Newport News have very desireable areas and areas that are less desireable.  You would need to explore each city to see what you are comfortable with and what is in your budget.  It is a fantastic place to retire. Milder weather and easy access to all venues, entertainment, sports culture. You will never be bored. Financially the cost of living is much better than living in NYC (I know I'm from NY)and as for the issue of crime, crime is always a concern no matter where you reside. But it is in no way a concern as in NY. Most areas are very safe, neighbors are very supportive of each other. People are much friendlier here. As far as gangs go, I can only go by what I read in the paper, and that is rarely mentioned. My advice is to visit each area, tour, check out available Real Estate (which is more affordable than NY) and see where you are most comfortable. For retiring - it's a great place to be.  Hope this helps.  Feel free to ask about any other concerns. Helen
