Expert: Helen Date: 9/25/2004 Subject: what should I see on a side trip from Williamsburg?
Question We will be in Williamsburg for 5 days before Xmas. I have heard Hampton Roads area is nice. What do you recommend that we not miss? We will be staying in Williamsburg and seeing also Jamestown. We are not interested in shopping or Bush Gardens, etc.
Answer In the city of Hampton, is the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Excellent. In Newport News is the Virginia Living Museum and the Mariners Museum (Not to be missed). They presently are restoring the Monitor and they have relics from the Titanic. If you want to venture a little further you will reach downtown Norfolk. Go to the waterside. Nauticus the National Naval Museum is there as is the Battleship Wisconsin. If you're interests are art, there's the Chrysler Museum (excellent) and the Gen. Mac Arthur museum. There will be Holiday lights shows to view from your car at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, downtown Portsmouth, and if you venture a little further to my area, Virginia Beach, you can drive on the boardwalk and view the holiday lights over the water. The Williamsburg area has special holiday events in the colonial section. There will be many different activities during this time of year. Do check with your hotel as to what is going on in each area. It will take you approx 10-15 minutes to reach Hampton/Newport News and probably 25 min to Norfolk. All are off Route 64. Hope this has been helpful. You will truly enjoy yourself! Helen
