Don't worry, this most likely is not a big problem. One thing you will need though is a service manual for your '78.

You may even be able to pick one up cheaper on e-bay.
What this sounds like is that the gear shifter plate needs to be adjusted. The shift guide plate is located under the gearshift which is held on by two screws.
Adjustment is fairly simple, but you do need to refer to the correct angles only a picture in the book can provide.
