Question Every time i turn the car over I get the same problem. When i turn the key in the ignition i get a strange cranking/whurring sound, it will do this between 2 and 6 times and then it will start. its starting to get annoying now. I have taken it to a garage and the problem was fixed for a couple of weeks and then it returned. Is it as simple as changing the starter motor or is it something else? aand can i fix it myself?
Answer It could either be the battery or the solenoid on the starter. You may want to get your battery tested if it is over a couple years old. I'd go to someone that carries your brand of battery, because if it is the battery, you can take advantage of the pro-rated warranty. If it is the solenoid, you may be able to change just that, but most likely you will need to replace the whole starter. The best thing is to bring the entire starter to the parts store and have them bench test it. It could also be that the pinion is just worn out.
