Volkswagen/Timing Belt

I have a 2002 Jetta 1.8T, and it has 83,000 miles on it.  It was recommended as well to have the timing belt changed to avoid further problems in the event the current belt were to break.  I guess I'm really lucky, $545.00 USD, and that in 2008?  Anyway I was happy to read that I wasn't the only one told to replace this belt.  Could have been a dealers way to collect unnecessary $$$.  LINDA

Wanted to add to this...I just found out my timing belt BROKE...and they want $ 5,000 to fix my engine head that was destroyed because of the belt breaking.  Consider yourself lucky; my mech. did not advise me to replace my belt so I had no idea this could happen.  My VW jetta has 72,000 miles on it currently.

yes, that sounds cheap to me, my 2003 is about 1500 to replace.
