I have been doing all my own work on my two Passats for a decade. I have been giving sound repair advice on PassatWorld.com for the past few years.

Education/Credentials
No relevant auto related degrees unless a BSME counts.

Follow-Ups to Answer from Expert Robert Greenfield

I have a 2000 VW Beetle and the check engine light would always come on. I had the car checked out from top to bottom by two different shops and they could not find anything wrong. They would reset error codes on the onboard computer, but the light would be back within 200 miles of driving. The biggest problem was that it would not pass inspection, so now I had to deal with it and I didn't feel like spending thousands of dollars at the dealer for diagnostics (This is one of the most frequent reasons for a VW Dealer visit).
So I checked every component of the fuel system and it turns out that the Mass Air Flow sensor was the problem. It is a $90 part in NY and it took me all of 10 minutes to put it in. The car has never run better.
This is a common problem on vw vehicles, mainly because they've used sub-par quality components for electrical and fuel systems.

Hope this helps,

Harry
