Question My wife 2000 Jetta has a problem of being very sluggish and even cutting out when put into a forward gear and trying to accelerate. However it does not do this in reverse.Code reader gave these codes P1128 Fuel Air Metering, P0172 System too Rich, P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire. I have already changed plugs and wires, and I put a new fuel pump and filter in about 7 months ago. What could be causing this problem?
Answer Hi Steve;
This 2.0 litre engine has an engine code of "AEG." That means this car has an actual throttle cable to the throttle body, and depends on vacuum to meter fuel pressure. There is a small vacuum hose that is normally covered with braided cloth material to do something...I don't like it, it gets real brittle, and breaks. Take off the plastic cover over the engine. Under it you will see a small hose at the left hand side(as you are looking at it). It is probably broken. Replace it, and see if the off idle throttle response improves. That's the cheap fix. There's another, also very likely scenario...the MAF sensor is probably bad, as well. It's the thing with the wire connector on the back side of the filter housing.
Good luck, Steve.
