Question
Have a 3 speed automatic no OD, so I am told.  In 3rd gear motor runs 3200 rpm, I thought these kinds of auto trans had OD.  Someone told me that it was electronic and could be adjusted, the dealer said the differential gear was a higher ratio than normal.  Who do I believe.

Also, are spark plugs easy to change?   1.8 Turbo gas.

Thanks
Bob

Answer
Bob...a 2004 1.8T New Beetle, sedan, or convertible came from the factory with a 5 speed, tiptronic automatic transmission.  Are you sure this isn't a 2003?  What is the engine code?  The 3 letter engine code..ie., AWW, AWP, AWM, AZG, and so on.  Also what is the transmission code...also three letters...FDF, FDC, EZZ,..etc.
No spark plugs are not hard to change.  Remove the plastic engine cover disconnect all 4 ignition coils from the wiring harness at the back of the cylinder head, and then remove the coils.  Then use a spark plug socket, with an extension, and remove the plugs.  When installing the new ones, use a dab of anti-seize compound on the threads, and torque them to 18 lb.-ft.  NOT any more. you only need to seat the plug, and remember these are aluminum cylinder heads, and you can strip out the threads easily if you are misaligned, or if you overtighten.  Get back to through this forum with the engine, and trans. codes.  I'll look at some further spec. sheets at work, too.  However, the transmission IS overdrive, and it has AT LEAST 4 forward speeds.  Have fun, Robert.
