Question
If the AC compressor needs replacing will the heat not work as well?  If not where else should I look?

Answer
Paul,
The A/C compressor is not directly related to the heater system.  However an electrical problem can cause the interior blower fan not work, which would affect both systems.
Heat is provided by radiator coolant routed by 2 heater hoses through the interior "heater core" under the dash, which gets hot, then the fan then blows air across and through the vents.  Possible causes of no heat are the heater control cable, the heater control valve (in the engine compartment inline with one of the heater hoses) or there is a clog in the system (needs to be back flushed).  Using non-VW approved coolant can sometimes cause clogs.
