Subject: 97 jetta GL 2.0 a/t - door lock vacuum

Question
Rocky, the auto door locks quit working but the vacuum pump (@ rt rear inner qtr panel) runs on for a few mins each time I use the LF door key. I have looked for leaks, but before I pull al 4 door panes off I thought I'd ck with you about any tricks. I recall on the old m.benz we used to pinch off lines one by one at the spider vacuum connecter on the floorboard to isolate the leak area. any clue where to start or quickest diagnosis? thanks, mike in Dallas. German car mech.

Answer
Hi MIke;
Sorry for the delay.  I've had to work too.  No real shortcut.  Normally, with all the wear the front left door gets, it's that one.  Check the connectors in the door hinges first.  Plug a line, at the hinge with a slightly oversized "BB."  Put the hingew back together, and see if the pump stops...if not check the next door hinge the same way.  You've probably got this one figured out by now.  Good luck.
