Don't forget to unclip the airbag connectors or otherwise you might break the wires.  There are two.  the smaller squeeze the clips at the sides.  The larger, look to the side where the wires go into the seat.  At the back there is a clip.  Push the pin inward with a small screwdriver and it comes apart easily.

Notice he didn't mention detaching the electrical connections.  Hell, why bother - -  the wires aren't all that tough, you can just rip them out, right?

Expertise

I am an expert automotive mechanic. My shop in Los Angeles specializes in repairing, selling, and supplying parts for water-cooled VWs (1975-2005).

Experience

I have owned an automotive repair shop since 1987. I have been working on water-cooled VWs for some twenty five years. I have owned as well as repaired hundreds of water-cooled VWs. Many times other mechanics send jobs regarding water-cooled VWs to me for repair when they can't figure the problem out.
