I agree with the individual who said to replace the transmission. I own a 1996 VW GTi 2.0. I believe we have the same transmission which is the CLK which you'll learn has many problems. I recently had mine replaced for only $ 1,560. I was amazed, every where else wanted to charge me at least double or quadruple to either rebuild or order a brand new one from Germany. I am extremely happy with my decision to get a used transmission and I think you will be too.

This could be a pilot bearing in the flywheel not allowing the input shaft of the transmission to stop turning completely. The other gears seem to works fine but when you try to get into any other gear especialy first, is it slightly hard to put into gear? The other gears have a syncro ring to help them slow down the gear or match the speed of the gear to allow somewhat smooth shifting. This will allow it seem that the other gears are all right to engage but not reverse.
