Question Coach Hagenlocher, my daughter is just under 5'9". She is a Soph and played on her HS team that finished second in the State this year. She was second team all-state and all-metro as a middle player. She plays on an elite club team also. On her school team she plays every rotation. In club she plays middle and some defense. Coaches view her as a middle player. She is very athletic and has a very good vertical. She is an A student. She wants to play in college. But when I look at all the college rosters I wonder if they will be interested in her because of lack of height. I wonder if she should try and be recruited as a defensive player. Your thoughts?
Answer Larry,
As a soph she still has two years to grow. 5'9" is not what most Division I schools are looking for in a middle hitter but there may be a few. If she is a good defensive player and if she can pass 5'9" is a decent height for an outside hitter. I would love to recruit a player who can hit all the sets like a middle but can play outside.
Make sure she works hard on passing and playing defense. If she is a great passer/defender someone will recruit her.
