About Matthew Huthmacher
Expertise
I can handle questions regarding functions of the game, tactics for training, and overall fundamentals regarding both the indoor and outdoor game, (6/2 man teams).

Experience
I have played volleyball for the past 15 years. I started in the sand down in FL, (2-man), and moved indoors for college where I played for one year at Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne under coach Arnie Ball, who in 2000 scouted for the Men's National Team, and transfered to Park University to complete my collegiate career in 1997-2000. Since then, I have played on and off maintaining my skill sets.

Question
I've got kind of an odd rule question.  My friends and I play pretty regularly
and usually play calling most of the rules.  There's one guy who plays with us
and if the third hit is a free ball he will swipe at the ball in a passing
formation in such a way that his arms come from side to side putting a lot of
spin on the ball.  I understand that sets can not have too much spin but are
passes  allowed to have as much spin as possible?  I asked my friend who
played div 1 in college and she didn't know.  Thanks

Answer
Gary-
I'll answer this from the top of my head rather than quoting a rule book, so if anyone else out there has a better answer...please feel free.
The hand set you were referring to with too much spin is true.  That rule applies because the setter must have the ball enter the hands and leave the hands at the same time.  In a perfect world, a set that does this will leave the hands with typically no spin at all.  As for the pass, it's a different story.  there is no such rule.  Whether the pass is on the first ball or thr third, theres no difference.  Therefore, however the ball comes out is fine, even if the player is trying to put spin on the ball.
Look at it this way, if your buddy is doing this on a regular basis...be thankful for the free ball.  spin or no spin, it should be pretty easy to put that ball back in transition and run your offense.  I hope this helps.  If you get conflicting word from someone else, please let me know!

Matt
