Question Hi Tina,
I coach a social uni team and have one player who is quite good and is going to play state league this year while still training with me. But he has one big problem. He is right handed but uses a left handed spike approach and tends to start he approach fast then before he jumps stops loosing he speed. I have tried having him spike with a tennis ball but it has had little effect. Do you have any suggestion to fix the problem? Thanks for the help
Answer Well, we both know its too late to change the approach! He may need a little resistance training with reps. For example, using the tube bands(excersize bands: they are rubber and tubular and long) put him in a spiking rep drill...have him wait at the line, with this band around the front of him, and you holding the ends together be hind him. The key is to hold him back, have him work really hard to start his approach, then you let go of on end of the band and he should get his approach stronger, faster, and like a bullet....you should wait until he is almost going to be late on the approach to let go, so it will force him to use more speed.....Hope this works!
