Expert: Ray Niemi Date: 5/5/2008 Subject: 1997 volvo 960 gear position sensor
Question I am replacing the gear position sensor. Had a difficult time getting the old sensor off (It was really tight on the shaft it slides on to.) I Have the new sensor on the shaft but it is very tight. I do not want to tap it on for fear of damaging. Shoold it be this tight?
Also any special way that the sensor should be lined up?
Answer John,
Seems too tight. Clean off the shaft with emory cloth and wire brush. Make sure the large nut on the new GPS is loosened apply a little grease to the shaft.. The mark on the sensor is the Neutral poaition use that as a guide. There also is a special tool available.
