Subject: Volvo 1996 850 Turbo Wagon post-fuel pump replacement

I just brought my Volvo 850T wagon into the mechanic and had the fuel pump replaced. I was late to a pistons game and ran the gas too low and incidentally burnt the fuel pump. Since its replacement the car has started heavier than before. The engine needs to now turn over a few times before actually starting. Additionally, if I turn the key so that all the lights come on, but dont actually start the car (Ive done this in an effort to give the fuel pump extra time to run prior to starting the car) then it generally starts for a second and shuts off. I can then start it right afterwards, but I am concerned there is a bigger issue at hand. Let me know what you think. Thanks a bunch.

My guess is that the fuel system is not able to hold REST pressure and the fuel in the line is leaking back to the tank. You may want a second opinion by a different shop. Make sure the shops that you use are shops that work on Volvo's so that they have the understanding of the systems.
Secondly install a fuel pressure gauage and watch the pressure running, when you turn if off watch it for an hour, also overnight see how long it takes to regain the pressure. There might be a fuel pressure regulator problem.  Running press about 42 psi, hold rest pressure above 28 psi for 45 minutes. Should pump up pressure in just a few seconds when starting cold.
