Subject: Volvo V70 GLT 2.4L system too rich

Question
I have scanned my Volvo and recently had Cylinder misfires. Mostly on #3 also once #2 once on #4 and one multiple misfires. I also have been having system too rich code for about 6 months. I replaced the plug, wires, distributer cap and rotor. The cylinders are not misfiring but after I changed the plug wires lastly it makes ticking sounds at under that plug cover. not sure why.  I also found a couple hoses that were not attached, downstream of the MAF sensor. I reconnected those two and still get the bank 1 system too rich. How do I tell if the O2 sensors, fuel pump or pressure and the air mass meter are all functioning correctly? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer
Matt,
You need a scan tool that has live data to read the HO2S sensors. If you are conserned about a vacuum leak you need to "smoke test" the mainfold for leakage. Fuel pressure is tested with a gauge. It will be about 42psi. Holding rest pressure above 20 psi for about 45 mins.
MAF can also be tested with live data on the scanner. To be right up many times that I suspect a MAF is going bad I reaplace it and see how well the car runs. I have found that the tests are sometimes "iffy". If you are hearing a spark under the plug cover you need to inspect and replace the wires or plugs. I always use the Volvo cap rotor and wires using original parts. I use the BOSCH Super Plus plugs.
