I have the same car with the same problem and Borton Volvo in Golden Valley, MN (suburb of Minneapolis) knew EXACTLY what was wrong and repaired it under my Certified Used Volvo Warranty. You need to have the bracket under your car which holds up the exhaust pipe replaced. It seems weird, but when it rains and water splashes up on this bracket the rear wheel drive shaft actually rubs ever so slightly on the bracket causing the loud and annoying metal to metal screech or squeal. I thought it was a V-belt or an idler pulley at first myself. The Volvo Dealer Junge, in Cedar Rapids, IA where I purchased my 2004 XC-70 had no clue and could not repair it. I even had a cell phone "movie" with sound of the noise but Junge was no help! However Borton knew exactly what caused this and showed me an internet Volvo mechanics BLOG post about it.
