Expert: Ray Niemi Date: 7/16/2008 Subject: volvo v70 2.4 T gear selector reduced function
Question QUESTION: The code in the subject just came up on my car. I drove it home fine, but noticed that the lights in the automatic shifter were not on and the W buttom was soft.
ANSWER: Bridgit,
There is not a code listed in the subject line. Get to a dealer or Volvo repair shop have the codes read and lets see if there is a code for some transmission related problem. There has been many problems with the gear position sensors failing.

QUESTION: The code is actually a message. It is "gear selector reduced function".
Answer Bridgit,
The message you have needs further attention. You need to have the fault codes in the trans control system read to know what they are. What I do is read the codes record them, clear all code and drive the car to see if any codes return and deal with those. To read codes you need a scan tool with Volvo software. Generic software is sometime inaccurate.
