Volvo - Volvo S80 Won't Shift Out of Park in Cold Weather
Question I have a 2001 Volvo S80 T6 with 63,000 miles. When it is cold outside (seems to be below 45 to 50 degrees), the car won't shift out of park when it is first started. Similarly in cold weather, I have problems removing the key in cold temps. In warm weather or if the car has been driven for for 30 to 40 minutes, I don't have either problem. Any thoughts?
Answer Dean,
Seems likely to be two problems. First the shift lock solenoid may not be getting power when cold to unlock the shifter. That could be a bad solenoid, brake light switch, or wiring. Second sounds like a bad ignition lock assembly, or worn key. Try using another key for a few days to see if the lock works better.
The brake light switch is located on the column at the brake pedal. The shift lock solenoid is part if the gear shift assembly, inside and under the shifter panel, in the shift bucket.
