Volvo/key stuck in ignition

Thanks for all your useful advice!  2 other sites gave 2 other easier things to try.  One easily worked to help me get my stuck key out, one didn't but is an easy thing to try too.

My key was stuck because the shiftlock override button was stuck down. With a small screwdriver and pliers I popped the button up and the key easily turned all the way and came out.

Another site suggested making sure that the button on the floor mounted transmission shift lever was fully retracted.  Apparently if this  button is slightly stuck, the key will also not remove.  This was not my problem but a couple other people removed their keys by unsticking this button at Park.

We just experienced the same problem and used the pliers solution.  The shiftlock override button popped up with a bit of help and the key then came out, no problem.

Thank God, there are people with common sense that advice on the simpliest solutions. I should have read this contribution before dismantling the plastic covers on the steering wheel. Just a drop of W40 to smooth the shiftlock override and a gentle pull up with some pliers, and key was release. My shiftlock override should have been pressed at its minimum by accident, in fact it showed popped-up, but this minimal push down was the case. Now I keep such button lubricated to it never got stuck again.

Worked for me !!!!!! Volvo V70 XC Cross Country, 1998

The button by the shifter is probably stuck in the depressed position.  Spray one squirt of WD-40 on it then work it in and out until the key releases.

I have had the same problem for weeks, putting off going to a garage.

Thankfully the answer is simple.

Next to your shift lever is a 'Shiftlock Overide' Button.  Spray a little WD40 on it and gently lever it up, even if it appears up.

Your key should now release

Thanks to all. A little oil & pliers worked like a charm.

Thanks for the tip. It really worked in helping unlock the shiftlock button, I had to add WD-40 a few times, and play with a small screwdriver and pliers..but it worked and the key came out right away.

Don't give up, it might take you a while.

Thank god for google and your forum, my car V70 1999 has developed a problem with ABS coming on at low speed, came back home after testing the car and couldn't get the key out, AHHHHH

so depressing. but releasing the shiftlock override button released the ignition key. So only one problem now the abs brakes(life was a lot easier before abs esp etc etc)
