Expert: Roger Patricio Date: 6/15/2008 Subject: 1996 Volvo 850--AC not performing properly
Question Roger:
My Volvo AC is not functioning properly. It has Freon in it (no apparent leaks), proper pressure levels, and the compressor will come on and blow cold. It typically quits after about 15 minutes and the compressor will not cycle on. After a period of time, it will run again for the same 15 minutes or so. The dealer said that the evaporator is has debris in it affecting the flow of freon and must be replaced (at a horrible cost of $2,000!). This diagnosis seems odd to me but I am not an expert. Is it possible to flush the evaporator (or the complete ac system) while still in the car? The dealer admits this may just be the first step in repair. What is your opinion of their diagnosis.
Answer Bob, talk about getting Raped. It sounds like a crock to me. An Evaporator job is no more than $1000 because it is labor intensive. What needs to be fixed on your car is that the clutch needs to be rehimmed. Over the years the gap separates. Find a Volvo Specialist shop since this dealer is trying to rape you through the coals.
