Question
QUESTION: Hello! I have a 1984 240 turbo wagon with an M46 four speed with electronic overdrive. The overdrive, however, does not work. I have consulted my shop manual and have run out of knowledge. So far, I know my relay is functioning or "clicking," as is my J type solenoid when voltage is applied. The light for Overdrive comes on in the dash whenever I hit the push button on the shifter. Today, I took off the overdrive pan and cleaned the filter and screen. I dont have a guage that reads to 550 PSI, nor do I know where to get one to check the operating pressures. I was wondering if my overdrive switch on the housing may be bad? Are there any other problem areas you could think of, or am I going to have to remove the transmission to remedy an problem. I have droppped an M47 for a clutch job before, so I know I can do that, but if I dont have to, well, that would be great. Any help you could provide would be great. Thank you very much and have a great day.

Adam

ANSWER: Adam, you nver really told me what the problem is,  Can you hear the solonoid click when you try putting into O/D?  What is the issue?  Roger

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Sorry, Roger. The problem is that although I hear clicks from the relay and I think the solenoid, The transmission will not engage overdrive when driving. Should the click from the solenoid be loud enough to hear when driving? When I was right near it, I could hear it clicking or shifting when voltage was applied. I have my dash light on for O/D, but there is no drop in RPM or any indication that the transmission responds to the swith when it is hit. All I have is a light for O/D and no actual gear change. Hope this is enough. Thanks again for the help.

Answer
Adam, okay, now its a little clearer.  You should be able to hear it with the car in 4th gear, with it not running and just turn the key to on position and push the button.  You can hear is go click, its not super loud but you can hear it.  Also check the fluid level in the trans.  If after you have checked all the above then the O/D will need to be rebuilt.  Roger
