Subject: Cutting out and grey smoke

Question
QUESTION: Hi there, we have a Volvo 940 SE Turbo and it keeps cutting out, there is also a hell of a lot of smoke coming out the back.  we know it may have something to do with the head gasket but have no idea whereabouts that is.  neither of us know a thing about cras but we just can't afford a mechanic so have to try to fix it ourselves.  I just havn't a clue where to start.  can you help in any way please.
By the way I'm over in the UK so not asking if you could pop over and take a lokk! - LOL!
Thanks
Ursula

ANSWER: Ursula, If you both do not understand anything about cars, how am I supposed to help you?  A head gasket job is not an easy job for even the novice mechanic.  It may be a bad turbo hose or a bad Turbo charger itself causing all the smoke.  Does the car run rough?   Would love to make a trip to the UK.  Havent been there yet.  Roger

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi.
I appreciate that if it is the head gasket I stand no chance in repairing in but if it is, as you say the hose would i be able to do that? I have always repaired minor problems myself but obviously have had notes to follow up on.  Basically, are there any small things that I would be able to do myself, that i can check beforehand, this would save me having anyone out and finding out it was something so simple that i could have done it.  The car actually runs really well and doesn't sound rough at all, the cutting out seems to be when we are waiting at stop signs or junctions etc, it always starts up again straight away so could there just be a blockage in a fuel line or something? once the car is on the open road it runs brilliantly.
Sorry to be a pain Roger oh! and trust me you are missing nothing by not visiting the UK - LOL!
Thanks again
Ursula

Answer
Ursula, Well, you can check all the turbo hoses.  That would cause a stall, but what I would start off with is cleaning the throtle body with carb cleaner. Usually that clears this problem up but there are so many different things that can be wrong.   I want to visit the UK to get away from this hot Sun that I deal with in Florida.  I'm sick of Florida.  Time for a Change.  Take Care.  Roger
