Experience
I am a Certified Volvo Tech at in Independent Volvo Repair shop. I grew up around Volvos and decided I wanted to do it professionally. I worked at the dealer for about a year then I went to work at an Independent shop which I have been with for 10 years.

Subject: Volvo sunroof

Question
The sunroof on my 1996 Volvo 850 wagon closes smoothly, but won't open.  It makes a noisy, ratchety sound as if gears were no longer meshing. Is this repair/replacement I should try myself? Is there someone in the Chicago area who would fix the sunroof at a fair price?  Thanks very much.

TJudge

Answer
Tony, I dont recommend messing with it.  Sounds like the cables are messed up or possibly a crunched track piece.  Hard to say without looking at it.  In chicago, the only place I have in my book is the dealer.  The only specialist shop is in Schaumburg. You can try a search of the area but that is all I have.  Roger
