Subject: volvo 850 valve noise and oil leak

Question
Hi I really have 3 questions about two 850 turbos one a 94 the other 97.
The 94 is my daughters car and recently it started to leak oil out the oil filler
so i replaced the gasket and it stopped but now it is leaking from the dip
stick. I have not worked much with 850s but used to tinker with 240s that we
drove for years and this would happen when the flame trap became clogged.
Do 850s have a flame trap the book I have does not mention it and I do not
see where one would be.
Second question on my 850 97 when it warms up the engine makes a lot of
noise that sounds to me like lifter noise, but I always thought that lifters were
noisiest when you started not when the car warmed up. The guy that services
the car keeps say its nothing it worries me. The car runs great except for this.
The second problem I have is that the air bag light comes on and stays on
when you run the car, this started happening right after the dealer replace
the ignition switch. The dealer claims that it had nothing to do with their work
except it happened a mile after leaving . Could they had done something
when replacing the switch ? is this a fault that will show up on a OMB and tell
you where it the location of the fault.

Answer
Frank, Usually what leaks is the dipstick tube o-ring on the block.  10 minute repair.  Some have flame trap filters, some dont.  Most of the Turbos do not.  The flame trap is located on the air breather hose. you will see it connected on the hose.  It twists off to the left.  The 97 with the lifter noise is semi normal unless the orings in the oil pan are torn.  The pan would have to be dropped and all the orings replaced.  Leave this one to a dealer or Volvo shop.  Joes garage wont know what the heck Im talking about.  As far as the SRS light, when you mean igntion switch, was it the whole lock assembly or just the electrical portion of the switch?  Whats a OMB?  If you mean OBD2 then yes it will tell you the problem.  Roger
